The golden lights and towering structures of the lighthouses on our shores have granted many men of our province safe passage to home and their families embracing arms. Mothers, wives, and children awaiting their sons, husbands, and fathers to return safely from the chill of the waters where we have made our livelihoods for generations, my own family was no exception. I started this project in honor of my grandfather a former steward from the Canadian Coastguard, and to become closer with my two-time great-grandfather a former lighthouse keeper in Port de Grave. For this reason, I have chosen to not only showcase lighthouses that stood the test of time and are still in operation but I also have included lighthouses that are no longer standing. For the paintings that showcase former lighthouses, I used photo references from local archives as well as descriptions provided by past government censuses. I also decided to showcase both the lighthouses as they are today as well as how they were when still being operated by a lighthouse keeper who lived in the no longer standing attached houses that most are now missing. This series is currently ongoing.
